The Family Behind the Factory

Three Generations of Hands on the Same Masa

Tony Jaramillo dreamed of running a small kitchen with Alma, a place where they'd sell tamales by the dozen and feed neighbors by the plate. He never got to see all of it. Alma did. After Tony passed, she kept the masa moving, kept the recipe steady, and kept the doors open through every kind of week Lubbock has seen. Now Victor (Tony and Alma's son) runs the factory she built. The roots go deeper than this kitchen alone: in 1957, Irma and Jesse Leal opened Leal's Tortilla Factory and started a family habit. Three generations later, we're still in it.

We don't have a 200-store distribution chain or a fancy showroom. What we have is a little hole in the wall on 19th Street where the masa hits the steamer at sunup and the regulars start showing up before noon. Other tamale companies hide their prices and ship from a warehouse two cities over. We post our prices, fold each one by hand, and ask you to come on by.

Mon–Fri, 11 AM to 9 PM

On Any Weekday at 6205 19th

The masa hits the steamer before the doors open. Pork in red chile starts cooking at sunup, the chicken simmers in green salsa, and the green chile gets roasted off in batches that fill the kitchen with a smell every regular knows. By 11:30, the lunch crowd starts coming in — the dental office across the way, the construction crew working on a job nearby, the family who's been ordering a half-dozen for thirty years.

We're open Monday through Friday, 11 AM to 9 PM. Walk in any time the doors are open, call (806) 780-LEAL to phone-in your pickup, or order through DoorDash if you're across town. Closed Saturdays and Sundays — that's when the kitchen rests and the family is home.

A Leal's family-size order — tray of plates with sides, ready for an office lunch or a holiday table

Need Tamales for Your Office, Party, or Holiday Table?

Five dozen for an office lunch, fifty for a wedding, three hundred for the company Christmas party — the math just changes the lead time. Under ten dozen, walk in. Five-plus, give us forty-eight hours. Fifty-plus, plan a couple weeks ahead and put down a deposit. Holidays book six to eight weeks out.
